What Readers are Saying
In I Have Outlived Myself, Martin O’Malley delivers a deeply reflective and introspective exploration of aging, identity, and the quiet search for meaning. With honesty and emotional depth, he captures the unsettling feeling of being disconnected from the life you once knew, while gently probing what still remains possible. The writing is thoughtful and often poignant, inviting readers to confront their own fears about time, relevance, and purpose. Yet beneath the melancholy lies a subtle thread of resilience. A moving, contemplative work that speaks to anyone grappling with change, loss, and the enduring question of what comes next.
The thought of being in a coma after a car accident might have the whiff of finality for some people. It is hard to imagine coming back from such a situation, but O’Malley used these circumstances to reshape his life. The path to recovery was not easy, in fact, he has been left with life altering injuries including brain damage. Viewing life through a new lens that finds the humor even in calamity has helped his recovery, both physical and emotional.
Despite the uplifting and inspirational message, O’Malley does not shy away from his own shortcomings. He acknowledges the behavior that led to the crash and his current physical limitations. His story has a significant cautionary component, but he never loses his grasp on the potential that the future holds.
O’Malley connects with the reader not just through his message but also with raw honesty. The tone feels personal, and despite the weight of the darker moments, it never fails to remind us of the central redemptive theme.

It’s one of those heavy reads that hits more emotionally than you expect. The story mixes some really tough moments with bits of humor, which makes it feel raw but still human. I liked how it focuses on rebuilding and finding meaning after everything falls apart. It’s not exactly an easy or light read, but it feels honest and real. Definitely one that stays on your mind after finishing it.
I Have Outlived Myself by Martin O Malley is an excellent read that shows us why we need to set boundaries for ourselves and work to keep our vices in check. The author shows us the trauma he has lived through: alcoholism followed by a horrible car accident that left him with a brain injury which, oddly enough, makes him sound intoxicated at all times. His road to recovery and his acceptance of the irony of the situation are explained in detail, but more importantly the author shows us how he has learned to live his life in a more positive way. By looking at his story, we can learn why our own lives are so precious and need to be protected at all times. This can be read both as a self-help book for motivation or as a memoir that is worth reflecting on.
I Have Outlived Myself by Martin O'Malley is such a heavy but inspirational tale. O'Malley walks us through his life while trying to find the meaning of it. What's different from a lot of the memoirs I've read is that he understands that God has a purpose for him in this world and he embraces it. He turns his life around and understands that he has to work on himself to move forward. I couldn't put this book down. I definitely recommend this book for everyone.
I admire that the author shares their honest experiences with the brutal realities of recovering from trauma. The trials and tribulations displayed in this memoir depict the truth about recovery but also exhibit the true endurance of the author throughout the process.
I Have Outlived Myself by Martin O Malley is a raw and deeply personal memoir that blends hardship with unexpected humor and spiritual reflection. Its strength lies in its honesty—capturing the realities of recovery, addiction, and identity after trauma without losing a sense of perspective. The writing is straightforward but emotionally impactful, making the journey feel authentic rather than polished. While not overly literary, it succeeds as an inspiring and thought-provoking story of resilience and renewed purpose.
